Weekend in the Forgotten Borough

We’ll meet on Saturday morning at the Ferry where, shortly after, we’ll take in the views from the extremely moving/well done/breathtaking Staten Island September 11 Memorial, also the future site of a ferris wheel bigger than the London Eye (photo or link?).

From there, its a short trip to Snug Harbor, a complex worthy of a weekend trip in its own right.  As we make our way up the highest point on the Eastern Seaboard, south of Maine, there will be a number of fun stops and spectacular views of the New York Harbor will help you to forget about your burning thighs.

Rolling through Staten Island's secluded central Greenway is a sight for sore New York eyes.  And, a weekend afternoon at Historic Ricmondtown will really make you question whether we've crossed city limits.

In the afternoon, we'll make our way back towards Arthur Kill where the evidence of the transformation Fresh Kills Landfill into the city's largest park is well under way (link?).  Arthur Kill is infamously home to one of New York's best kept secrets-- the Boat Graveyard!  If the tide is low, intrepid riders are welcome to have a closer look.

Saturday's dinner at a century-old Bavarian restaurant & beer garden is always a welcomed sight after a day of good ride.  Here, you'll have plenty of time to relax, replenish those calories, and, if we're lucky, take in some live music from the old country.  Transportation will be provided from the restaurant to the campsite were Day 1 will end with S'mores around the campfire and optional waterfront walks.

Waking up on the peaceful New York City waterfront, the city buzzing in the not-too-distant distance, is something all New Yorkers should experience at least once.   Take a walk on the beach, or up to the 200-year -old 'cliff' that is Ft. Wadsworth, or just relax around the morning campfire as Verrazano buzzes overhead.  Breakfast will be served at 9:00am and we'll hit the road at 10:00am.

Sunday's ride will be more leisurely as we ride the boardwalk and beachfront bike path down to Great Kills Harbor (lunch here?).  Lunch stop beech bar?  In the afternoon?  oldest standing building on SI? weird museum? hardware shop?  Alice Austin House, SI's 'up and coming' neighborhoods

We'll have you back the ferry by 5pm, you'll be home around 6, refreshed from your Weekend Getaway, never having left the city!
